What We Do
Unhurried Living seeks to encourage Christian leaders in their spiritual life to rest deeper, live fuller and lead better. We provide spiritual formation coaching and spiritual direction to help leaders lead from fullness rather than on empty.
What Is Spiritual Formation?
Spiritual formation is the journey of change we experience as we cooperate with the transforming work of the Holy Spirit in our inner life. It is learning to embrace God’s grace and let it shape our way of life and work. Spiritual formation is essential to a healthy Christian life. Dallas Willard said that, for the Christ-follower, spiritual formation refers to the Spirit-driven process of forming the inner world of the human self in such a way that it becomes like the inner being of Christ himself.
What Is Spiritual Leadership?
Spiritual leadership is the influence that grows in the life of leader being transformed by the power of God’s Spirit. Spiritual leadership is learning to robustly practice spiritual disciplines that deepen the roots of leaders in the love of God. Effective spiritual leaders learn to experience the depths of God’s love so they know how to lead others into those same depths. Such leadership bears the fruit of transformed lives and expanded kingdom influence.

"Alan provided a communal slowing that helped us see what God was doing among us. I learned how to notice God’s kingdom narrative in my every day life. Alan gave us practical ways to actually be an unhurried leader. Being in a group of like-minded leaders slowing down together was life-giving."
John P. Freeman
Director of Grace Discipleship
"Retreats with Alan & Gem have provided a sacred space to pull away and step into a facilitated solitude of unhurried time to listen and reflect in God’s presence. I inevitably emerge with a refreshed soul, a gladness of heart, and a deeper love for the One who invites us to ever deeper intimacy, and often surprisingly – a clarity of vision for what I need to do next in my place of vocational leadership."
Carol Taylor
President Emeritus, Evangel University
"It was good to share life with wonderful women noticing, discerning and responding to our thoughts in community. We shared similar challenges and desires for transformation. Gem guided us with love, grace and humor. My tool chest has been packed to overflowing with soul-nurturing resources I can use daily."
Jane Couperus
Financial Counselor
"Working with young adults, I see firsthand how challenging it is to live an unhurried life. We’re taught that it’s all about what you do, what you accomplish. Personally, I’ve enjoyed the work of Unhurried Living. Professionally, their work might be among the most important for this next generation."
