Intentional Soul Care: How Does My Soul Find Rest?

Oct 09, 2019

When we get busy, it’s easy to neglect the care of our own soul. And when this happens, everything in our lives—our relationships, our perspective, our attitude, our work—is affected. On this week’s Unhurried Living podcast (episode 95), we talk about the Unhurried Living dynamic of Intentional Soul Care. Intentional is key. Leaders too easily assume the well-being of their own souls and, in our experience, it is a fatal assumption. Soul care requires intention.

Resting Isn't As Easy As It Looks

Jul 03, 2019

If you’ve read it, you may remember that the subtitle of An Unhurried Life is “Following Jesus' Rhythms of Work and Rest.” I continue to find that both inviting and challenging. How about you?

One of the biblical lines I unpacked in the chapter on “Rest” is Hebrews 4:9: “Make every effort to enter his rest.” From one perspective, that sentence sounds like a contradiction between two very different phrases. “Make every effort” and...

The Gift of Unexpected Rest

May 08, 2019

God takes rest seriously. Rest is built into the very fabric of creation. The first full day after the creation of humanity is a day of rest—a Sabbath. God rests. We rest. And rest is the place in which relationship is established and cultivated. This is why God urges us to enter his rest. It isn’t merely a moralism. It is an invitation to be rooted in love and grace. But it’s an invitation that we too often fail to open.

I’ve often been struck by an almost throw-away...

Do I Have To Go There To Be Here?

Mar 20, 2019

Over the course of the last year and a half, as we’ve been writing What Does Your Soul Love?, we have set aside times to get away to focus on the writing. Thanks to generous friends with homes near Duck Creek, UT and Avila Beach, CA, these getaways were fruitful times of thinking and composing. We were really able to sink down into the work and focus.

After our second writing getaway I began to ask the question, “Why can’t I focus like this at home (in my home...

Podcast: Invitation: Jesus' Question That Changes Everything

Dec 03, 2018

The nature of Jesus and his grace is in His invitation to us; it is how He approaches us. But what invitation question does He ask to draw us to Him?

A common approach to living the Christian life is to focus on our own faith, our own practices, our own faithfulness. The emphasis in the story of scripture always begins with God—God’s great faithfulness, God’s mighty works, God’s generous grace. Today, we’ll talk about a key question Jesus asks in the gospels
that...

Nov 19, 2018

How can the idea of sabbath and rest be subversive when it is built into the very fabric of God's beautiful creation? Join us this week as we look at the surprising power of rest.

Without giving too much away, here are four of of the nine questions A.J. and I discuss in this podcast.

Podcast: 9 Practical Challenges to Living Less Hurried

Jan 08, 2018

Last year we polled our community and asked them a key question: “What is the biggest challenge you face right now in living a more unhurried life?” Living less hurried can be a challenge. We got some great responses.

We arranged the responses into five categories which will be the theme of some of our upcoming episodes. Those themes are:

  • Practical Challenges to Living Less Hurried
  • Dealing with Workplace Stress
  • Inner Distractions & Soul Busyness
  • Keeping First Things First
  • ...

What Makes a Good Retreat?

Nov 20, 2007

With the theme of retreat in mind, I recently reviewed a book by Thomas Green titled A Vacation with the Lord. This was one very helpful insight he shared:

“I always suggest that three guidelines for a good retreat are, as a Dominican sister-friend of mine once noted, ESP: to eat well, to sleep well, and to pray the rest of the time. This means that I make it a real vacation. I don’t just give the Lord part of my time and part of myself; rather I seek, in the classic monastic...
