Podcast: Chris Heuertz: Silence, Solitude, Stillness and the Sacred Enneagram, Part 2

May 06, 2019

Welcome to part 2 of our interview with Chris Heuertz and "The Sacred Enneagram".

In his book, The Sacred Enneagram, Chris Heuertz states, “Real transformation takes place when we pair the self-awareness that the Enneagram stimulates with the silence of contemplative practice. Then our unique path to spiritual growth emerges, and we will never be the same.”

I could not be more thrilled to have Chris Heuertz as my guest today. What he is bringing to the Enneagram...

Podcast: What the Monks Can Teach Us (JK Jones)

Jan 29, 2018

Thanks for joining us today. I’m glad your listening to this episode. You’re really going to enjoy what our guest, JK Jones, has to share about what he’s learned from the Monks. He wrote a book a while back titled: What the Monks Can Teach Us. We enjoyed sharing some of the ways that monastic writings, monastic communities and monastic practices have been a source of grace and wisdom for us in our journey with Jesus. You’ll also appreciate his gracious, humble,...

Podcast: Real Stories of Solitude and Silence

Sep 11, 2017

Today we are talking about Solitude and Silence or what we call Unhurried Time with God. But this is not just a “you should do it” talk. We are going to share stories from our own lives. From early on in our own experience and one from within the last month.

We share these with you so you can see how we started out. We were in our late 20s and were just beginning our process of solitude and silence.

Many of us unconsciously resist solitude because we don’t actually want to...

Solitude Retreat: An Unhurried Day With God

Jul 19, 2017

I’m sitting here in my room at the Prince of Peace Abbey in Oceanside, CA on a cool and beautiful Tuesday morning. Gem and I are here for our monthly solitude retreat. I’ve enjoyed hundreds of days like this over the last 27 years. It’s a life-giving rhythm that we both would say has saved our lives, saved our marriage, saved our ministry. And it’s a major element of our ministry to others these days with Unhurried Living.

I wanted to write a bit about this experience...

Season of Life

Mar 29, 2017

When I was a young mom with a toddler and nursing baby, I began to experience God differently than I had as a young married woman with no children. (*cough…no, duh*)

Any of us in life stages where we find ourselves as caretakers can hear about an unhurried life and think, “Yeah, that’ll never happen. Not in this season. I’m just trying to take a shower and put on fresh sweatpants today.”

We know quite a few of you are dealing with stage of life issues because...

Solitude: A School for Purpose

Feb 01, 2017

I’m writing this post in a moment of solitude from a third-floor guest room at the Sustainable Faith Indy urban retreat house in Indianapolis, Indiana. We have been hosted by our friends, Dave & Beth Booram. We enjoyed holding a talk and book signing for An Unhurried Life here during our visit. (By the way, I’ve enjoyed Beth’s most recent book, Starting Something New: Spiritual Direction for Your God-Given Dream, especially in light of launching Unhurried Living in the...

Retreats: What Are They and Why Make Them?

Oct 19, 2016

Scroll to the bottom of this post to download a free Retreat eBook that includes a schedule for a 24-hour retreat, with options for a half-day and full-day retreats.

Over the years, I’ve led or been part of countless retreats: youth retreats, couples retreats, men’s retreats (never a woman’s retreat—surprise!), leadership retreats, strategic planning retreats, spiritual retreats. What I’ve learned is that there a lot of different ideas out there about what...

My First Experience of Unhurried Time with God

May 04, 2016

I’ve often told the story of my first experience of solitude and silence on January 19, 1990. It was led by one of my mentors, Wayne Anderson, as part of a class I was taking at Fuller Seminary. I tell a little of that story in An Unhurried Life (p. 20f), but I have never shared the full journal entry from that day until now. It is page 1 of my journal that today, 26 years later, runs over 8,700 pages.

That journal has captured my attempt to practice a long obedience in the same...
